World Book Day
Year 1 have been learning all about senses as part of their Science topic. They discussed what it would be like to have impaired senses and their teacher, Miss Spencer, organised a guide dog visit. An absolutely gorgeous Golden Retriever called Frankie came to meet the children. His trainer, Myriam, explained what it takes to be a guide dog and what they can do when living with a person who is blind or visually impaired. They also learnt that qualified guide dogs wear fluorescent strips around a white harness. Guide dogs are trained to walk in a straight line, to guide around obstacles and to stop at kerbs. Its owner still needs to know how to get to places like shops and back home, so they can tell it which way to go.
The children listened intently and were then invited to ask questions. "How many meals do they eat?'" was one question, followed by, "What jobs does he do around the house?" and, "What are his favourite treats?"
